In the latest Star Wars: The Old Republic developer blog we finally get some updates on how the free-to-play conversion is being received by MMO gamers!
Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, posted a new developer blog today giving players a nice state of the game update. He hit on a lot of topics, but most notably he gave a long awaited update on how SWTOR is doing since the free-to-play conversion.
On that topic specifically, he had this to say:
“Judging by the conversation in the forums and elsewhere, there appears to be a level of curiosity among many players to learn how things are going at the studio since the launch of the Free-to-Play option. Of course, that’s natural. We’re now about 120 days post-launch and more than 5 months into our new series of content updates, so we’re just starting to get a feel for it ourselves. In our commitment to improve the overall player experience, it’s important to reflect on all of the changes that we have made since last year.”
“So how did it go? Well, you can see for yourself when you log in to the game. Our new, high capacity servers are teeming with people. Since launch of the Free-to-Play option we have had over 2 million new accounts created and have thousands of new players jumping in every single day. This means more people to play with, more growth for your guilds, more Warzone matches, and more ways for players to continue to advance their characters.”
As far as I’m concerned, this is welcome news! Star Wars: The Old Republic really is a great MMO. At launch I really wanted to enjoy it more than I was at the time and I was really let down that my experience in the game was not living up to my expectations. Personally, I played actively for about four or five months and then walked away from the game – essentially due to lack of things to do at end game.
Since the free-to-play conversion though, I know many friends who have come back to SWTOR and have really been enjoying it…a lot…and they are actively trying to recruit me back! Also, since the F2P switch, just about everybody has been asking “how is the game doing?” Well, today we finally got our answer – 2 million new accounts in a 90 day period! This is certainly nothing to laugh at, in fact, I think it’s pretty phenomenal! It’s great to see that SWTOR is starting to thrive again. I may just have to check it out for myself soon!
Mr. Hickman also covered some other topics in his dev blog including: character customizations, the rate of new content patches, and their plan for future fixes and in general quality of life additions to the game.
